1. Understand the Rotary Yoneyama Scholarship

The Rotary Yoneyama Scholarship is a private scholarship offered by Rotary Japan for international students who want to pursue higher education (undergraduate or graduate) in Japan. This scholarship provides financial support for tuition and living expenses.

2. Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, applicants typically need to meet the following requirements:

  • Nationality: Must be a non-Japanese citizen.
  • Educational Background: You should be applying to or already admitted to a Japanese university, graduate school, or vocational school.
  • Age: Generally, applicants should be under 40 years old for master’s programs and under 45 for doctoral programs.
  • Language Proficiency: Although it’s not mandatory to speak Japanese, some level of proficiency is beneficial, especially for daily life in Japan.
  • No Prior Residence: Applicants should not have lived in Japan before applying.

3. Select a Japanese University

Before applying for the scholarship, you should select and apply to a Japanese university or program. The Rotary Yoneyama Scholarship can only be applied for after you’ve been accepted into a university or are in the process of applying.

4. Check the Application Deadlines

Application Period: The application period typically opens in October and runs until December for the following academic year.

Deadline: Ensure you apply by the deadline specified for the year you are targeting.

5. Prepare the Required Documents

You’ll need to prepare the following documents for the application:

  • Completed Application Form: This can be downloaded from the official Rotary Yoneyama website.
  • Letter of Admission: A letter of acceptance or admission from the Japanese university or program.
  • Academic Transcripts: Copies of your previous academic records, translated into English or Japanese.
  • Proof of Language Proficiency: Submit proof of proficiency in English (e.g., TOEFL or IELTS) or Japanese (e.g., JLPT), if required by the university.
  • Recommendation Letters: One or more letters of recommendation, ideally from your home country’s university professors or academic supervisors.
  • Research Plan: A detailed plan outlining your intended research or study goals in Japan, if applicable (usually for graduate students).

6. Complete the Online Application

  • Visit the official Rotary Yoneyama website and complete the application form online.
  • Ensure all required fields are filled in accurately and upload the necessary documents in the correct format (PDF is commonly used).

7. Submit the Application

Once your application is complete, submit it online before the deadline. Check your email for a confirmation of receipt.

8. Attend an Interview (If Required)

After submission, shortlisted candidates may be required to attend an interview with the Rotary Yoneyama Foundation, either in person or via video conference.

9. Wait for Results

The final selection results are usually announced in April. Successful applicants will be notified via email or official letter.

10. Acceptance and Scholarship Disbursement

If you are selected, you will need to formally accept the scholarship. The scholarship typically covers:

  • A monthly allowance (around ¥100,000–¥140,000, depending on your level of study).
  • Support for travel to Japan.
  • Other potential benefits, such as mentorship from Rotary members in Japan.

Tips for a Strong Application:

  • Show Motivation: In your personal statement, clearly explain your passion for studying in Japan, your career goals, and how receiving the scholarship will help you achieve them.
  • Demonstrate Rotary’s Values: Highlight any experience in community service, leadership, or global understanding, as these align with Rotary’s mission.
