Young African scholars have a unique chance to pursue a fully supported Master's degree at one of the most prominent institutions in the world through the University of Oxford's Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, which is in collaboration with the Africa Oxford Initiative (AfOx).

 

The University of Oxford and the Mastercard Foundation have an innovative and ambitious partnership under the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program and the Africa Oxford Initiative (AfOx). The partnership is set to provide 400 young African scholars with a fully-funded opportunity to pursue taught Masters degrees in programmes related to pandemic preparedness and recovery at the University of Oxford.

A wide range of advantages are provided by the Africa Oxford Initiative Scholarship 2025, guaranteeing that chosen students may concentrate on their academic and professional development:

 

  1. Full tuition coverage for the entire duration of the one-year Master’s program.
  2. Living expenses grant at the UKRI minimum doctoral stipend rate.
  3. Return economy airfare, visa fees, and Immigration Health Surcharge coverage.
  4. Settling-in allowance to assist scholars in adapting to life in the UK.
  5. Access to a Thrive Fund for emergency support.
  6. Bespoke Leadership and Impact Program, designed to foster collaborative leadership skills for cross-sector solutions to Africa’s challenges.

  8. AfOx Alumni Network: A lifelong network that supports scholars even after their academic journey, providing career mentoring and opportunities for collaboration.

 

Qualifications for Eligibility

In order to be eligible for the University of Oxford's Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, candidates need to fulfill the following requirements:

 

  • African Nationality: Must be a resident of an African country and committed to contributing to Africa’s development.
  • Master’s Degree Application: Applicants must apply for one of the eligible taught Master’s programs at the University of Oxford by the course-specific deadline.
  • Academic Excellence: Demonstrate a strong academic record and potential for high achievement.
  • Leadership Potential: Evidence of leadership experience and a commitment to contributing to their community and Africa’s development.
  • Alignment with AfOx Themes: A commitment to addressing issues related to pandemic preparedness, food systems, health sciences, sustainable water and energy systems, governance, and entrepreneurship.
  • Underrepresented Groups: Priority is given to candidates from historically underrepresented groups, including women, people from refugee or displaced backgrounds, and those with disabilities.

 

Deadlines for Applications

The following are the application deadlines for the several Master's programs offered by the University of Oxford:

 

  • 15th November 2024: Some courses
  • 3rd December 2024: Medical Sciences and some other courses
  • 7th January 2025: Humanities courses
  • 8th January 2025: Mathematical, Physical, and Life Sciences courses
  • 9th January 2025: Some Social Sciences courses
  • 28th January 2025: Other Social Sciences courses
  • 29th January 2025: Continuing Education, Law, and other remaining courses.
