Recruit overseas workers

Having trouble recruiting local labour? Need to fill your skills needs with overseas workers? The following tools may assist.

Working Holiday Maker Programme

Under the Working Holiday Maker Programme, travellers can supplement their holiday budget by working in short-term appointments. There are two visa options – Working Holiday (Subclass 417) and Work and Holiday (Subclass 462), each with different eligibility terms and conditions.

Visa holders are able to work in Australia for up to six months with each employer. Working holiday makers who work in tourism and hospitality in northern Australia will be eligible to receive a six month work extension at the end of six months employment, enabling them to work for the same employer for 12 months.

Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (TSS)

The TSS visa replaced the Subclass 457 visa on 18 March 2018. The TSS visa lets businesses sponsor a skilled worker from overseas where suitable Australian workers are not available. The TSS visa has two main streams:

  • The Short-Term stream is for employers to source temporary overseas skilled workers in occupations on the Short-Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) for a maximum of two years (or four years if an international trade obligation applies).
  • The Medium-Term stream is for employers to source highly skilled overseas workers in occupations on the Medium and Long-Term Stream Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) for up to four years, with eligibility to apply for permanent residence after three years. Regional employers can nominate additional occupations for this stream.

Global Talent Scheme

This new program was announced on 19 March 2018 and will be piloted for 12 months from 1 July 2018. The Global Talent Scheme will provide businesses, including Australian startups, with a way to sponsor highly-skilled and specialised workers not covered by the standard Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa (subclass 482) program.

Skill Select: online service to recruit skilled migrants

SkillSelect is an online service that enables skilled workers interested in migrating to Australia to record their details and be considered for a skilled visa. Employers can quickly and easily identify and contact intending skilled migrants and nominate them for skilled visas to fill shortages.
