Your Role at Cabot

Cabot Reinforcement Materials, R&D Elastomers Team is looking for a Summer Intern to provide support for lab equipment characterization, process optimization, and test variation reduction. The candidate will conduct experiments on laboratory equipment used in the rubber industry with the goal of identifying best factors to reduce data variability. The project will support the lab’s goals to provide repeatable, reliable, accurate, and timely test results. This position offers a great opportunity for a college student to apply academic knowledge and gain industry experience designing DOEs, creating measurement systems analysis datasets, and analyzing data using statistics with JMP software. Due to the technical nature of the work involved, this position requires pursuit in chemistry, polymer science, materials science, engineering, data science, or statistics. The candidate must have basic hands-on lab training, or experience working in a university or industry labs.

How You Will Make an Impact

  • Conduct literature and background research on methodologies, and provide initial technical assessment or assumptions of the project
  • Define short-term research plan with goals, and utilize DOE tools to design experiments
  • Execute lab experiment(s) to generate data, document observations, and results
  • Understand and operate rubber laboratory equipment ranging from mixing, curing and testing equipment
  • Analyze experimental design results, and report results in an organized format
  • Create a presentation of your work

What You Will Bring to Cabot

  • Currently enrolled in undergraduate program
  • Strong focus on safety, completed basic chemical/chemistry lab safety training
  • Hands-on university-level laboratory experience
  • Experience writing formal laboratory reports and presentations
  • Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or Materials Science with knowledge of statistics or data science
  • Quick learner, problem solver, results driven mindset
  • Self-motivated and passionately engaged in the project
